AUTOMATIC DRYER CONTROL

In this system a single-pole, double-throw thermostat is connected to the dryer timer motor and the heat source. With this arrangement, one or the other of the dryer components is energized, but never both at the same time; when the heat source is off, the dryer timer motor is on, and vice versa.

By using a short-duration timer in conjunction junction with the dryer thermostat, a time/temperature relationship is automatically established. It works like this: The dryer thermostat, which senses the temperature of the exhaust air, turns off the heating element or burner upon start-up. The timer motor is off, and the timer not advances.

The clothing is very damp al this point, entering the drum from the heat source absorbs a great deal of moisture. Because of the evaporative process, the temperature remains fairly cool and temperature rise is rather low. If the dryer now shuts down with the proper little sensor is shorted or grounded. Look for clips, or wire strands across the “feelers” or for a break in the insulating, material If the dryer continues to run, the problem is most likely within the control. You may use your VOM to check further by testing the timer contacts or the relay. Stuck timer or relay contacts prevent the dryer from turning off. Open or high-resistance contacts prevent the dryer from running.

If these components test okay, your problem definitely is in the control area. Before condemning the control, however, check to see that a positive ground is provided by a wire attached from the cabinet to the cold-water line. Since the critical control current is fed to ground, this wire must be provided in addition to the cabinet ground provided to file neutral line of the power supply, used in most areas. While a ground to a water line is acceptable for safety purposes, it is not sufficient to allow proper operation of electronic controls.
